[edit] Character creation

To keep things fair, even and reasonable I am running character creation without dicerolls:

  • I am using the point buy system for attribute scores from the Pathfinder rulebook, described on pages 15 and 16. I am using the standard fantasy option at the bottom of page 16, which gives you fifteen points to work with.
  • For starting gold at first level I am taking the pre-generated average rolls from page 140. Look this up for your class and that is your starting gold.
  • If you are creating a character above 1st level then please ask me how much gold you are starting with. Because I am giving out less treasure than a standard medium-to-high-fantasy Pathfinder game, the pre-generated character wealth for characters above 1st level table would give out far too much money. Do not use the table on page 399 to generate your starting wealth for generating new characters above 1st level.

[edit] Rules available

At the moment I am semi-restricting the game to Pathfinder Players Handbook only. That is, if you want something that is not in the Pathfinder Players Handbook then I need to approve it first. For all of you (former) Labyrinthe players, the system I am using is a lot like yellow paper.

  • There are some human variants available, these are slight tweaks for humans from countries other than Argatia.

[edit] Character advancement

  • I am using the Medium XP advancement track from the PRPG core rulebook, page 30. That is, the one that takes 2,000 XP to get to 2nd level.
  • As pointed out, this XP track does not work identically to D&D 3.5's XP track. IE: There is no simple formula to calculate the XP required to reach a level. Or, at least, there is, but it stops working after level 5.

[edit] Deities and religion

The world of Yarel does not use the deities and religions presented in the Pathfinder RPG core book, it has its own set of deities, pantheons and churches. That list of is also available as a summary of all churches, listing every church in Yarel and some information about each.

Religious player characters should choose their religion from the available player character religions. These religions are generally accepted in the central continent. Speaking one of their prayers in public is unlikely to get you killed by an angry mob.

[edit] House rules

I will be using a few house rules in this campaign. These tend to be either clarifications or extra options at character creation. The full list of house rules follows:

[edit] Setting-related rules/advice

  • I am essentially prohibiting half-orc player characters.
A limited few half-orcs exist in Yarel but they are considered enemies of civilised people. In any civilised area half-orcs are put to death on sight without trial (think witchhunts and lynch mobs). Half-orcs and their kin all live in the wilderness where they can either remain solitary or find more open-minded individuals.
Despite this, the campaign will often see the party in civilised areas which would put half-orc characters in an impossible situation. Whey will either run a high risk of being attacked for entering a town or they will be forced to sit out of long sections of the game.
  • Players are advised to take Argatian as either their first language or at least amongst their languages, as it is the commonly-spoken language in the area where the players will be starting. Without it you won't be able to communicate with 90% of the local population!
Taking other regional languages amongst your extra languages might be useful though.
